Americans are looking to travel for the holidays in 2021, according to a survey by The Vacationer. The survey found that 63 percent of American adults (161 million people) are planning to travel for at least one holiday before the end of 2021, and 42 percent of American adults (109 million) are planning to travel for Thanksgiving.
Thirty-nine million people plan to travel for Thanksgiving only and 70 million for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa.
Those surveyed were also asked what form of transportation they plan to use for their travel, and the majority (67.8 percent) said they will be traveling by car, followed by airplane (10.52 percent), and public transportation (3.66 percent).
Younger Americans are planning to travel by airplanes for Thanksgiving — with 13.92 percent of Americans who are 18 to 29 years old traveling by air. Only 6.2 percent of Americans over the age of 60 are planning to travel by airplane.
The 10.52 percent of Americans who responded that they would be traveling by plane would put the total number at 27 million this Thanksgiving season, significantly higher than the 9.5 percent that flew for Thanksgiving 2020.
The majority of those planning to travel plan to keep their trip on a low budget, with 79.81 percent planning to spend under $500.
