Those in the tourism industry understand how locations across the world have struggled since 2020. But as countries begin to open up and remove restrictions, tourism is making a comeback.
The European Union’s (EU) Eurostat found that tourism in the EU improved overall in 2021, over 2020. However, the numbers were still lower than previous years. Eurostat found their numbers based on hotel nights (and other short-term accommodations).
In 2021, EU short-term accommodations saw 1.8 billion nights, which was up 27 percent from 2020, but 37 percent lower than 2019.
Only three EU states — Latvia, Slovakia, and Austria — saw negative trends between 2020 and 2021. All other states saw improvements, some of them significant.
