France will be banning short-term flights within the country, encouraging train travel instead. A new law requires any flights to be canceled that can be replaced by a train journey under two-and-a-half hours.
The new law went into effect in mid-May, although many airlines have already been working to scrap routes that fit within the rules, including Paris airport Orly to the Bordeaux, Lyon, and Nantes regions. The regions are all served by France’s high-speed trains. The law will allow transfers to remain, if travelers are continuing on in their travels.
Air France has a partnership with SNCF, France’s national rail company, that allows travelers to combine train and plane reservations, and many other airlines are following.
