Spain is expanding their high-speed rail service with the addition of new lines on the Spanish state operator Renfe’s low-cost, high-speed rail service Avlo.
The new line will take passengers 300 miles (or 500 kilometers) between Madrid and Barcelona in less than three hours. The cost for passengers will start at around $6 (or €5).
The new Avlo service can travel up to 330 kilometers (km) an hour, and can take up to 438 passengers each trip. Avlo expects to be operating four daily journeys at launch, which is currently slated for June 23.
Renfe has converted 112 high-speed trains for the service, and will have stops along the way — which will cause the additional time to the journey, according to CNN Travel. The service was supposed to launch in April, but has been delayed due to COVID. The €5 tickets will be offered until the end of 2021.
Renfe said they sold 100,000 tickets in the first 24 hours after the initial release.
Spain residents and visitors will also have a choice to travel on the French state operator SNCF’s Ouigo network, which is another low-cost, high-speed rail service traveling the same route. That service is due to launch in May.
