Grand Teton Park in Wyoming has already surpassed their past visitor records in 2021, in the first nine months of the year. The park, as well as nearby Yellowstone, have shown an increase in visitors as people look to get outdoors.
Between January and September 2021, Grand Teton saw 3,493,937 visitors — 2,786 more than in 2018, the previous record. According to the Associated Press, trail use at Grand Teton is up 29 percent from 2019 and 49 percent from 2016. Although the parks are seeing visitors year-round, they have seen an increase in visitors in the months of March, April, and May. July 2021 was the busiest month in park history.
“The visitor experience is a resource, just like moose or clean air, and it’s something we are actively working to preserve and protect,” said Grand Teton Superintendent Chip Jenkins, explaining that they are working to figure out how to safely welcome more visitors.
Yellowstone had 4.5 million visitors between January and September of 2021. The park had never had more than four million visitors in one year, and their previous record in 2016 was just under four million.
Visits to the park were down in 2020, likely due to travel restrictions and closures, but the trend is showing travelers are looking for more outdoor experiences.
