Crystal Cruises has suspended operations, due to its parent company’s Genting Hong Kong’s financial issues. The suspension was originally through April and may for ocean and expedition ships, respectively, but the new announcement means there is no reopening date for the cruise line.
According to a statement released by Crystal, “Suspending operations will provide Crystal’s management team with an opportunity to evaluate the current state of business and examine various options moving forward.”
Crystal has three ships currently in operation — Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony sailing in the Caribbean and Crystal Endeavor in Antarctica – and all three will complete their voyages.
“This was an extremely difficult decision but a prudent one given the current business environment and recent developments with our parent company, Genting Hong Kong,” said Jack Anderson, Crystal’s president. “Crystal has been synonymous with luxury cruising for more than 30 years and we look forward to welcoming back our valued guests when we resume operations. We wish to thank our guests and travel advisors for their incredible support during these ongoing challenging times.”
In a statement, Genting Hong Kong said: “Certain business activities of the Group, including but not limited to the operations of cruiselines by Dream Cruises Holding Limited, shall continue in order to preserve and protect thecore assets and maintain the value of the Group; however it is anticipated that majority ofthe Group’s existing operations will cease to operate.”
They did not specifically mention Crystal Cruises, but did say they are looking for a Bermuda court to oversee the liquidation process.
Crystal Cruises’ guests are being notified, and all will receive a full refund of their cruise fare. If they paid by Future Cruise Payment or credit, they will receive the value in their Crystal Society profile account.
