Travel agency air ticket sales hit their highest point since February 2020, according to a report by the Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC). The February 2022 sales totaled $5.4 billion by travel agencies.
Air ticket sales also increased by 253 percent between February 2021 and February 2022. Previously, the high for pandemic-era ticket sales was in November 2021, at $4.4 billion.
In February 2022, total sales month-over-month increased 48 percent, total passenger trips increased 21 percent, US domestic trips increased 17 percent, and international trips increased 28 percent.
“Leisure demand nearing pre-pandemic levels and accelerated corporate travel bookings fueled another strong month of sales,” said Steve Solomon, vice president of global sales, marketing, operations and customer experience at ARC. “With the U.S. domestic travel market steadily rising, we are monitoring the war in Europe and its impact on the strong international travel growth to start the year.”
Between February 2021 and February 2022, there was also a 158 increase in international trips, and a 96 percent increase in domestic trips in the US.
Part of the increase came from an increase in ticket prices, with the average in February 2022 coming in at $464, compared with $346 in February 2021.
