Although many Americans have opted to travel domestically since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the trend for summer of 2022 is leaning toward European travel.
According to a report by Allianz Partners, the Top 10 Summer European Destinations, travel to Europe will reach 600 percent over 2021, largely due to many of the countries reopening in the last year.
For the report, Allianz looked at more than 40,000 flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
The top 10 cities for summer 2022 travel are:
- London, England
- Paris, France
- Dublin, Ireland
- Reykjavik, Iceland
- Rome, Italy
- Edinburgh, Scotland
- Lisbon, Portugal
- Athens, Greece
- Barcelona, Spain
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
London was also the number one city in 2021, likely helped by the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
“The pandemic made people realize you can’t take travel for granted and many Americans are eager to visit Europe this summer,” said Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA. “European destinations have made a significant effort to welcome Americans back and our data shows tremendous pent up demand for travel to the continent. International travelers should always consider travel insurance plans that provide reimbursement for covered trip cancellations and medical emergencies that may occur while traveling.”
The report also looked at the planned lengths of stay for upcoming summer European vacations, and found that 75 percent of travelers will spend seven days on vacation, with 11 percent spending eight days. May 27, the start of Memorial Day weekend, is expected to the most popular travel day.
